Nationwide Alcohol Ban Goes into Effect Saturday

PHNOM PENH: The Royal Government issued instructions on the suspension of the sale and consumption of alcohol for the day before and the day of this Sunday’s election.

The government bans the sale and consumption of alcohol every election in accordance with the laws, regulations and procedures for national elections. The ban is intended to ensure a free, fair and just election with no violence, threats, or intimidation as a result of alcohol.

The government noted that the consumption of alcohol can cause violence, traffic accidents, social embarrassment, crimes and in some cases, a loss of public order.

The decree stated, "All Cambodian citizens, foreigners, businessmen and traders living in the Kingdom of Cambodia must cooperate with the Royal Government, the Armed Forces of all kinds, regional administrations, and the National Election Committee by suspending the sale and consumption of alcohol one day before Election Day and Election Day, July 22 and 23, 2023."

Cambodia is holding its 7th National Assembly Election this Sunday, where millions of Cambodian voters will head to their home precincts to vote for a political party that will then appoint seats to the National Assembly.
